Vice President, Inflight Operations

A passionate Team Leader with an Employee-centric mindset, Steve Murtoff has offered Leadership and support to Southwest Airlines Flight Attendants in various roles for the past 20 years. Many of Southwest's Flight Crews have come to know Steve for his time and experience leading the Safety and Regulatory Compliance efforts within Inflight Operations at the Managing Director level. In addition to Safety, over the course of his 13 years serving on the Inflight Operations Director Team, Steve has led Inflight's Hospitality and Onboard Experience efforts, Base Operations Teams, Employee Engagement and Insights, Strategy and Planning, along with serving as the Chair of the Southwest Uniform Committee during the rollout of the new Employee uniforms in 2017. Prior to joining Southwest, Steve started his career on the front lines as an Operations Agent at America West Airlines, before stepping into a Leadership role within Inflight.   

As Vice President, Steve is responsible for leading Southwest's almost 20,000 Flight Attendants and all support Teams that play such a vital role in our Company's success.

Steve has a passion for Hospitality, which has extended beyond the walls of Southwest Airlines and into the greater onboard Customer Experience community. He has served on the board of the International Flight Services Association (IFSA) holding roles within their Executive Committee, including most recently as President and President Emeritus. Steve has been active within both IFSA and sister association–APEX (Airline Passenger Experience Association)—to bring together airline industry professionals and business partners with the aim of elevating the onboard Customer Experience. 

Steve and his wife Mandy are raising two wonderful children, Isabella (17) and Ethan (15), along with their English Bulldog, George. Growing up in the Boston area, Steve enjoys cheering on his New England sports teams and traveling back for games, particularly in the fall to enjoy the beautiful foliage.  Coming from a Penn State family, Steve also attended Pennsylvania State University prior to moving to Phoenix to start his career in aviation.
