AirTran Airways Responds to Failed Georgia House Bill 1157
AirTran Airways (NYSE: AAI), a subsidiary of AirTran Holdings, Inc., announced today that it appreciated the Georgia General Assembly's fair hearing of a modified bill that would have enabled the airline to receive sales tax exemptions on its jet fuel. Georgia House Bill 1157 failed to pass Thursday when time ran out on the 2006 legislative session.
"AirTran Airways has worked cooperatively with Governor Sonny Perdue and legislative leaders in the Georgia House and Senate with regard to legislation designed to assist airlines in creating new employment and expanded air service in the state," said Joe Leonard, AirTran Airways' chairman and chief executive officer. "We supported all proposals that would have provided equitable relief to air carriers dedicated to growth in Georgia. Although legislation relating to airlines did not pass, we recognize that the Governor and the legislature had many issues to deal with in this year's session, and we appreciate the fair hearing we received during this process."
More than 5,000 AirTran crew members make their home in Georgia, and the airline generates more than $1 billion in positive economic impact in the state each year. AirTran Airways looks forward to expanding air service and employment in the state in the months and years ahead -- the airline is expected to add 20 new Boeing aircraft in 2006.
AirTran Airways, one of America's largest low-fare airlines with 7,000 friendly, professional Crew Members, operates over 600 daily flights to 50 destinations. The airline's hub is at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport, where it is the second largest carrier. AirTran Airways recently added the fuel-efficient Boeing 737-700 aircraft to create America's youngest all-Boeing fleet. The airline is also the first carrier to install XM Satellite Radio on a commercial aircraft. For reservations or more information, visit http://www.airtran.com (America Online Keyword: AirTran).
